Our History
Counts and Dobyns was founded as Counts Excavation. In 1986, Counts and Dobyns was formed as a partnership. At that time the company began to grow and employed 16 employees under the leadership of Terry P. Dobyns. In 1992 Terry Dobyns became the sole owner and the company continued to expand, consisting of, at present, four (4) divisions: Grading, Utility, Concrete, and Boring. Counts and Dobyns recognized the need to serve the customer with all phases of work provided within one company. This has worked well with clients who prefer one contractor to complete the project. Utilizing one contractor keeps costs down, eliminates the middle man (subcontractor, therefore avoiding delays) and having only one firm to be held responsible in lieu of involving subcontractors. Leadership and accountability are within each division. Our company has grown to a work force of approximately 120 employees, of which the majority have been with the company for more than nine years and are very dedicated.
Grading/Excavation
Our company has the ability to form at least six (6) crews and is capable of drilling, blasting and moving up to one million yards of dirt in a short time.

Utility
Counts and Dobyns has the ability to form nine (9) utility crews and has completed some of the most difficult CSO projects in the city of Lynchburg and Southwest VA areas.
Concrete
Counts and Dobyns has seven (7) concrete crews. We have a curb machine and other than curb and gutter we install box culverts, walls, and flat work.
Boring
The boring crew is self-sufficient and has the ability to perform with two (2) crews.
We also have a crew that has spent the last 5 years replacing and laying brick sidewalk and streets throughout the city of Lynchburg as part of the city's restoration projects. Counts and Dobyns employs four (4) mechanics. This allows us to perform maintenance both in our shop and out on the job sites if needed.
Counts & Dobyns is a VA licensed General Contractor performing heavy duty construction since 1973.
Counts and Dobyns also performs highway work. We are pre-qualified with VDOT (VA Dept. of Transportation) to perform in excess of $35 million.
Counts and Dobyns has one of the best reputations in getting the job completed on time and to the satisfaction of the customer. Our main goal is to ensure the customer's satisfaction.
